With around 2 million tonnes of freight in 2023, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is the leading cargo hub in Europe and among the top 15 worldwide.
Frankfurt Airport covers an area of approx. 22 km². This area handles the highest volume of freight in Europe - mainly in two dedicated cargo cities.
The range of airfreight services at Frankfurt Airport corresponds to a full-service portfolio. Almost any cargo can be handled. We are characterised by our expertise in demanding special cargo.
Various providers enable fast and reliable handling of international airmail and express shipments at the site thanks to state-of-the-art distribution and sorting technology.
The major express companies DHL, Fedex and TNT are based in CargoCity Frankfurt. At the same time, many airlines have specialised in this segment and offer special express services.
FRA has state-of-the-art dangerous goods warehouses for handling and picking dangerous goods of all classes and even radioactive freight. Storage for more than 24 hours is also possible without any problems.
At the Perishable Center Frankfurt (PCF), Europe's largest and most modern air freight centre for perishable goods, perishable goods find optimal conditions. Covering an area of 9,000m², it has 20 monitored temperature ranges from -24 °C to +24 °C. A vacuum cooler and other precooling systems ensure that the freight is cooled down quickly. All relevant authorities are located directly in the building. The PCF is also both GDP and CEIV-certified.
FRA offers around 14,000m² of temperature-controlled and GDP- and CEIV-certified handling areas in the first row for handling pharmaceuticals. Temperature-controlled transport by special vehicles is also possible on the apron. This unique infrastructure and the additional capacity provided by the specially designated pharmaceutical areas of numerous freight forwarders and other cargo handlers make FRA Europe's leading pharmaceutical hub.
Frankfurt specialises in unusual freight items. Whether particularly heavy, large or complicated to load - suitable equipment and specialists are available at FRA for all dimensions. The handlers at the site offer customised transport and handling solutions for special cargo on scheduled and charter flights.
FRA has the world's most modern animal centre at an airport. 50 highly qualified employees and trained animal keepers guarantee professional, species-appropriate care for an average of 110 million animals a year. Handling, animal coordination and the activities of the veterinary office are bundled on a generous total area of 4,000 m².
Numerous companies at the airport specialise in the handling of valuable goods. The facilities include high-security areas for loading and unloading delivery vehicles and secure areas for picking and consolidating goods.
Frankfurt Airport dominates as the largest air freight airport in Europe and is one of the world's top 15 airports. FRA plays a central role in global logistics, accounting for almost 50 per cent of the total air freight volume to and from Germany.
